We couldn’t think of a better person to be our first creative feature on our blog! Jenny Harenza is one of our most uniquely creative friends. If you know her, you know that she is one-of-a-kind and always true to herself. Jenny’s writing, imagination, and transparency continue to inspire us day after day.
What is your creative outlet?
My creative outlet is mostly through writing.
What does creativity mean to you?
Creativity is when we produce something that is inspired & pulled from the innermost parts of ourselves.
What is currently inspiring you?
Miranda July. She’s such a weird writer and is certainly uncomfortable at times but the way she interacts with the world is beautiful.
What are you currently working on?
I don’t have a computer right now so it’s been difficult to work big picture on any of my writing. Instead, I’ve been writing small poems and just general prose that voices my protest against certain things.
Is your creativity a hobby or a career?
It’s definitely not a career and probably never will be but hobby doesn’t sound right either. Writing for me is more like an appendage. It is part of me and I continue to exercise it because it’s there and it fulfills my purpose.
What is your favorite thing you’ve created?
My favorite writings that I’ve created are the intimate ones. For my Grandmother’s funeral I wrote a long poem about her house and her habits and it ended up being very nostalgic for everyone in the family as well as a permanent reminder of her. I wrote something for my father on father’s day as well. These intimate pieces are like safety deposit boxes, securing my sweetest memories.
Tell us a few fun facts about you!
I’m engaged! That’s fun and surreal. Also, I work at Starbucks, so be good to your local barista! I’ve had a few major concussions- so if we ever meet I’ll tell you the stories. Hint: one involves me going blind and the other, loss of memory.
